Countrywide spread of Delta variant reported in Sri Lanka : DDGHS

Lanka’s health ministry is updating its laboratory facilities to identify those who are infected with the rapidly spreading Delta COVID-19 variant in the country, the Ministry of Health states.

The Deputy Director-General of Health Services, Dr. Hemantha Herath emphasized that the public should act responsibly during this time.

“We take an approximate count of patients after collecting random samples from all over the island. We have already found patients from several Districts, including Galle, Colombo, Matara, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Gampaha, and Kalutara Districts,” he said.

“This is the result of conducting gene sequencing testing on random samples from all over the island. However, we cannot say that there are zero patients at other Districts, as this evidence itself is enough for us to decide that the variant has spread islandwide.” Dr. Herath stated.

He added that as of present 117 cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant have been reported from Sri Lanka.
